Our cause

At Shonenlagoon©, we know the value of being supported by the community. To repay the support we have been given by our valued customers, we believe giving back to others is the best way we can show our appreciation.

Who do we support?        Shonenlagoon© donates a portion of all profits made from our merchandise to manga and anime creators who struggle to pay for the cost of living. These artists provide amazing content for us and most of them barely make enough money to put food on their plates and pay for rent. This is why we believe in giving back to these amazing people who create the content we love.

The market share of the anime industry in Japan is an estimated 2 trillion yen. That’s approximately $18.8 billion USD. While the industry is seemingly thriving some of those within it aren’t seeing the benefits, especially its animators.

According to a 2015 JAnicA survey, the average monthly income for animators in their 20s is about 90,000 yen. That translates to about $800 USD. Based on this information, the majority of young animators in the industry earn less than the average minimum wage worker in Japan. Considering the amount of work animation takes, this is a surprisingly small amount.

According to The Animator Supporters, 90% of animators in the industry quit their jobs within the first three years. The enormous workload and the small pay are just two of the numerous factors that make this such a stressful and difficult profession to sustain for young newcomers. Sadly, their talents go to waste when animators have to quit the industry and us watchers will never see the wonderful content they would have created.

What do we do to fix this problem?       As the cost of living is a major breaking point for many newcomers, Shonenlagoon© provides a more accommodating alternative. Dorms cover key amenities such as water, electricity, air conditioning, wi-fi, etc. Our intentions are to provide affordable housing for new animators so they won't have to worry about struggling to live and can focus on their animation skills. This solution knocks out two birds with one stone because animators can pursue their careers and we get to enjoy more content that we love.

Since 2014, the project has welcomed 40 new residents and will continue beyond 2022. To further assist residential animators, the project provides what residents call tech support. Residents have the opportunity to take monthly courses to hone their skills taught by experienced animators, and are also provided with monthly sketching sessions while helping new animators find well-paid production companies.
